Testing for ionic contamination has been around since the inception of the PCB. Ionic contamination can lead to dendrite growth and corrosion. Contamination can cause current leakage across insulating surfaces resulting in shorts.  Some common sources of ionic residue include plating chemistries, flux activatior, perspiration and more.
